TBYC, I don't think i disagree with any of your comment.

You got my point... that the 'trilemma' isn't really a valid 'evangelical' tool (or how ever you want to put it).. it only makes any sense once someone accepts the bible to be reliable reportage. And frankly if someone is convinced of that, well, there's no leap what so ever to believing he is 'lord'.

You see the irony though, do you not? That to believe/accept that the bible is true and reliable takes an enormous leap.. its THAT which is the act of faith... not deciding if you believe Jesus. If the bible is reliable.. then it must have been ordained by god... therefore etc etc

It's a cognitive decision , upon weighing the evidence you are convinced that the bible was authored/sanctioned by a loving/creator god

I've read this post a couple of times and you are absolutely right that someone has to accept the Biblical accounts of Jesus to be put into the position where the trilemma comes into play. If they do, then I think that the trilemma operates a different way to you have suggested.

Jesus is reported as saying in the Gospel accounts that he was the way, the truth and the life (absolutes). He is also reported as saying that no-one comes to God his father except through him. He also confirms Peter's confession that he is the Christ.

Lewis was saying Jesus was deluded in claiming these things (mad), lying for some reason (bad) or was telling the truth (lord). This is different from what you seem to have taken in at least one way i.e. Jesus did/taught bad things. Rather, he has not given us the option of choosing to accept his teachings as true, but reject his claims of being the Messiah. Those claims are set out in the Gospels and therefore you have to accept the Gospels themselves as, well, Gospel truth.

It is shocking state of affairs in old Norn Iron too QM: there were ACTUAL shops (not just the RC ones) OPEN on the THE 12th: miracles do happen in this violence free utopia...
I was grateful to be at home, home and miss the True Blue Donaghadee Defenders (or some such title) banging their Lambeg past my window and that cocktail drinking got in the way of even watching the parade 'highlights' on TV. (I often hang out the window in my pjs with what I hope is a look of protest on my face but fear my just got out of bed presence may be taken as a gesture of support).
I hate this blantantly sectarian triumphantism; the cause of so many embittered, bigotry filled violent and fatal outbursts but laughed and laughed at your account of Sandy Row...distance and time makes for great storytelling.

Like WSM, I have a TV, but only use it for DVDs. French TV is crap anyway. I hate watching series or films that are dubbed (they're never subtitled here) so I usually check them out on the web if I can. The only good channel in France is a France-German partnership, called Arte. They sometimes have good documentaries and old arty-farty foreign films, in the original language, which I love.
They're actually planning to scrap the TV tax here in France, and replace it by a "media" tax : they want to tax the internet. Yup.

As for cars, there isn't any car tax here per se, but car insurance is really expensive — as well as driving lessons. That's why I'm sticking to my bicycle until kingdom come. Or until I find the motivation to actually GO to the lessons.

QM, agree re the fact that there is some great TV out there.

The flip of that is the amount of time you can waste watching pointless TV too. I'm writing this having watched The Two Ronnies Sketchbook, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Comedy Connections on 'Til Death Do Us Part tonight...

WNS, its a fair point. Especially re: ITV/C4 etc
i suppose its like… i don;t go to the opera but im happy for it to be subsidized buy taxes… i don’t really like athletics… but i’m reasonably ok for it to be paid for by my VAT (or whatever)
>>>I don’t. And proud of it!

why is it something to be proud of? Do you think TV is a negative influence? (you’re just teeing me up for another post arnt you!) or maybe you should do it, and i’ll spam your blog as per normal. I’d have to say that I haven’t seen a DVD/movie in the last few years which have been as thought provoking and enlightening as maybe 10-20 documentries or mini series ive seen on tellie.

Way back then most people didn’t have TVs so it was unfair to charge everyone for it, but now days every one has,

I don't. And proud of it! Although, I do actually have a TV, just not a licence for it, so I can only watch DVDs on it. I do think it's a bit pathetic that I'm not allowed to watch anything, just because I don't pay for the BBC (and yet, I can listen to BBC radio, and download podcasts, and use their website).
